Taroko was formed from metamorphic rock, the oldest in Taiwan, which underwent orogeny and compression into a foliated structure. From winding Jiuqudong Tunnel, both sides of Taroko’s magnificent walls can be seen, as well as the Liwu River that formed the v-shaped gorge cutting through the marble below.
