In 1917, the Japanese immigrants built a “Yoshino Shrine,” now the Ji’an Keishuin, to appease people and preach.In the period under Japanese rule, the principal deities of the temple were Kūkai, Acala, and Vaiśravaṇa. The building resembled the traditional Japanese temples in Koyasan. However, after 50 years of silence following World War II, the residents took the derelict Keishuin. The deities to which the main hall offered sacrifices were then changed to Sakyamuni Buddha and Guanshiyin Pusa.Later, Hualien County Government completed the maintenance work of Keishuin with circumspection and presented the 88 Buddha statues in the yard, which contain enormous historical meanings. To date, Keishuin has remained the most well-preserved historical building of the Shinto shrine from the period under Japanese rule in Eastern Taiwan and a third-class historical site. It is also one of the top destinations for the Japanese people who come to Taiwan to seek their family roots in Taiwan.
