Mataian Wetlands are a green natural paradise. Fudeng River meanders through the Mataian Wetlands from the south to the north, nurturing the rich ecosystem of the swamps. The Wetlands are full of liveliness, and if you cycle along the river, you will see fish, shrimps, shellfish, and whelks in any ditch you check.The Amis indigenous people have developed a fishing technique called “Balagao” amidst the wetlands.They make use of natural materials such as bamboo, brush pot trees, and the twigs from Subcostate Crape Myrtle trees to make a three-layer structure and put it into the river. In this way, they provide space for fish and shrimps to find food and habitats, and so that the Amis can also catch fish more easily. The Balagao fishing technique does not capture a large number of fish in one go, so the ecosystem can be sustainable, showing respect for nature
