Fuli Township
The Cilamitay tribe is in Fengnan Village, to Fuli Township, Hualien County. Most of the residents are Amis. Initially, their traditional plant was upland rice. However, during the Qing dynasty and the period under Japanese rule, people learned about cultivation techniques. As the rice variety grown here was of high quality, it was used to pay tribute to the Emperor of Japan during the period under Japanese rule. The part of the road of Futung Highway (Provincial Highway 23) bound for Cihalaay is similar to the Central Cross-Island Highway due to its gorge landform, so it is also called “small Tianxiang.”To the north of the Cilamitay tribe, there is a settlement called Cihalaay. The altitude of the fields is around 300 to 500 meters. The predecessors cultivated terraces according to the landform and built six irrigation systems for irrigating the rice fields. To this day, the people still use the labor barter system of the Amis to maintain the irrigation systems and original landform. The living skills that manifest the harmonious relationships between the people and land led to Chihalaay’s being registered as “Cihalaay Cultural Landscape” in 2012 by the Hualien County Government. Also, in 2016, the place was selected as one of the “2016 Green Destinations Top 100” in the Green Destinations selection in 2016.
