Moon Cave Recreation Area 1Moon Cave is a natural stalactite cave located in Fengbin Township, Hualien, about 1 km south of Shihtiping from Gongkou village, and is a paradise, also called the “Moon Cave” or “Moon Well” in the eyes of the indigenous people of the Gongkou tribe. Legend has it that there were swamp eels in the lake, and one weighing more than 10 kilograms was called the millennium eel.Moon Cave Recreation Area 2It is under construction and is expected to be opened in mid-April 2021, subject to actual construction conditions.


According to an Amis legend, the water in the Moon Cave will vary according to the moon. Hence it was named “Moon Well.”

Moon Cave Recreation Area 3The Moon Well is located about 1 kilometer south of Shitiping, and there are many lovely wooden fish sculptures on the observation deck of the park, which is also a great place to enjoy the splendid sea view. “Moon Cave” is a naturally formed close-ended rock cave in which water flows from the rocks and accumulates into a lake, with no inlet or outlet, but a tidal phenomenon.Moon Cave Recreation AreaOnce arriving, you can board a boat operated by staff to explore the stalactite landscape. By the light from the flashlight, you can listen to the explanation of how the cave was formed and the ecological environment inside the cave while proceeding. The animals inhabiting the cave top are the Taiwan leaf-nosed bat, bent-winged bat, and Formosan Lesser Horseshoe Bat, flying around as if playing hide and seek with visitors under the light, and thus adding a mysterious atmosphere to the cave.
