The sugar factory has now been transformed into central Hualien’s tourism development center. It has preserved a row of tidy Japanese-style single-story dorms that were built during the period under Japanese rule. To date, the buildings have had 80 years of history.At the sugar factory, visitors are advised to find out how sugar we use every day is made, and differences among white sugar, rock sugar, brown sugar, and dark brown sugar.

Although large-scaled cane sugar production has ended, the sugar factory has been transformed into a tourism factory in 2002 for development toward a park for tourism, recreation, education, culture, and experience. In the future, the factory will transform into a “sugar industry cultural & creative park”. Besides become a witness of history, it aims at becoming a tourist attraction in Hualien.

1. Take the TRA Eastern Trunk Line to Hualien. Get off at the Guangfu Station in Hualien. Walk for about 10 minutes to get there.
2. The factory’s hotel provides free pickup service from the Guangu Railway Station to the factor’s hotel. Please call in advance (03-8705881).

At 251.5K of Provincial Highway 9, turn right at 7-ELEVEN to enter the factory.
