People were encouraged to cultivate and produce tobacco during the Japanese occupation period; coupled with the government’s economic development policy for east Taiwan during the 1960s, it resulted in the vast tobacco-growing regions in Hakka villages at the time. The flourishing developments in the tobacco industry also created the highest concentration of tobacco barns in Taiwan. The Fenglin tobacco barn is an Osaka-type building with a protruding chimney on the roof to facilitate smoke extraction. Currently, approximately 33 tobacco barns remain that embody a fusion of Japanese architecture and Hakka cultural atmosphere, so why not slow down and take an in-depth tour of the tobacco barns to relive the former glory of the region.
