Entering "Salt Lick Locomotive Authentic American Barbecue", a locomotive-shaped grill stands at the door, emanating the rustic ambiance of the American West. A large number of wood elements and warm colors are utilized, and the smell of smoked barbecue pervades the atmosphere. Jason, sitting at the bar, is not only the soul of this restaurant, but also the maker of all the carpentry and decorations that can be seen throughout the house.
As an American, Jason has traveled to more than 40 countries and previously taught English in Taipei for five years, but he is not used to big cities and prefers the rustic simplicity of the countryside. Back then, every three months, he would drive an RV with family and friends to travel along the east coast. Among his favorite spots are Ji-Qi, Sanzhan Creek, Emerald Valley, and Rainbow Waterfall. He decided to move to Hualien seven years ago to enjoy the fresh air and simple life. In his leisure time, he often jogs along the Two Lakes Bikeway along the seashore, and once ran from Meilun to Sanzhan and Tso Tsang Trail to enjoy the beautiful scenery of mountains and sea. In recent years, he has also participated in various marathons, and has come through them with many good results.
"I have worked as a cook and a carpenter in the United States, so I have experience in setting up restaurants," Jason said. At that time, he and his partners decided to open an authentic American restaurant in Hualien. They started with space planning. The wood work of the restaurant of more than 60 square meters was completed on their own, from measurement and component production to splicing and painting. The wall is hung with cowboy leather hats, saddles, leather boots and several black and white photos, creating a modern and fresh atmosphere.
As the master chef, he also shows great skills in roasting. His signature is the shredded pork burger made with boned pork ribs sprinkled with 16 special spices. After slow-roasting for 16 hours, it is torn into strips. Adorned with a special sauce, the burger tastes strikingly good. Pork ribs are not only attractive in color, but also tender and juicy. The 24-ounce fire-grilled thick-cut T-bone steak, sprinkled with fine salt and grilled until it has been cooked three or five minutes, gives you the best original flavors of the beef. Meanwhile, hand-made pizza and fine brewed cold beer are the best companions of happy gatherings.
