Tsongau: Nimble Warriors Darting Between Mountains

“Tsongau” means “ape” in the Amis language. Since the Amis people lived on the plains, when they saw the nimble movements of mountain dwelling Atayal, they nicknamed them “Tsongau”. Later on, the mountainous area where Atayal people lived was dubbed Tsongau Mountain, and the name gradually became synonymous with the whole eastern mountain region as well.
