A Forest 48 Times the Size of Daan Park|Danongdafu Forest Park
During Hualien’s annual Rape Flower Blossom Season, farmers scatter rape flower seeds across fallow fields after the winter rice harvest, transforming the landscape into vast golden seas of blossoms. Meanwhile, garden cosmos—thriving in autumn, winter, and early spring—can be effortlessly grown by simply broadcasting seeds over the soil, making them an ideal choice for cultivating expansive floral fields. When it comes to sheer numbers, beauty follows—making these two blooms the most delightful and welcoming heralds of spring.
Once an expanse of sugarcane fields, Danongdafu Forest Park now spans 1,250 hectares, its history closely intertwined with the neighboring Guangfu Sugar Factory. When sugar production ceased in 2002, the park underwent a large-scale afforestation effort, introducing over 20 tree species—including Taiwan zelkova, evergreen ash, and Taiwanese rain trees. Today, it stands as one of the East Rift Valley’s most dazzling attractions.
Each winter break, Danongdafu Forest Park transforms into a breathtaking floral wonderland. Across five hectares, vast flower fields burst into bloom, featuring rape flower blossoms, garden cosmos, elegant zinnias, scarlet sage, and wild pansies in a kaleidoscope of colors. Over two hectares alone, more than a million rape flower blossoms blanket the land, followed by the garden cosmos, ensuring a seamless transition of floral beauty. On clear days, visitors are encouraged to rent a bicycle and revel in the sight of blossoms swaying gracefully in the wind.

Childhood Memories Transformed|Tulip Garden & Mama Farm
The Tulip Garden in Jian Township has long been a cherished memory for many young adults in their 20s and 30s. It first opened in 1988, and a few years later, a dreamy castle was added to the site. It became a must-visit destination for local elementary school students on field trips. After nearly 40 years of operation, the expansive Tulip Garden closed down as the owner prepared for retirement. However, it reopened at the end of 2023, and the township office has now developed a 'Happy Farm' within the area, open for Jian Township residents to claim. The township office first planted sunflowers, garden cosmos, and other flowers, allowing a vibrant display of blossoms to welcome the Lunar New Year. They also plan to establish a "Tulip Planting Area," and it is believed that, in due time, the beautiful memories of Tulip Garden will once again captivate visitors.
Mama Farm, also located in Jian Township, was once known as "Hualien Bay Happy Farm." Several years ago, it was the best place in Hualien City to view sunflower fields. Mama Farm will reopen in early 2025. The 14-hectare area is divided into a farm and a stable. In addition to growing a variety of organic crops, there is also a charming animal section. The ecological pond is home to graceful green-headed ducks and swans, while the stable allows visitors to purchase feed and interact closely with the horses. It's a perfect place for families to spend a relaxing and enjoyable day together.
