Hualien got its name from Hualien Port, which was originally called "Hui Lan" Port and later on became "Hualien". Hualien City is the biggest city in eastern Taiwan, both in economical and tourism sector. After the Japanese colonization period, the area among Zhongshan, Zhongzheng and Zhonghua Road became the city center and business district.

Ji'an is adjacent to Hualien City and has long history. The famous Keishuin was the Japanese Shrine during Japanese occupation. In suburbs lies beautiful vast land of farm which is ideal for cycling.


Shoufeng Township

Shoufeng is the only township crossing East Rift Valley and Coastal Mountain Range in Hualien. The area along the coast is called YanLiao (Salt Hut) because of the salt production in the old days, and is now a good choice for seafood like lobsters and abalone. The plains in East Rift Valley are rich for aquaculture and agricultural tourism. Dong Hwa University and Taiwan Hospitality and Tourism College are two educational institutes here.

Wanrong Township

Wanrong is an aboriginal town with dynamic landscape and big population of the Truku, Atayal and Bunun people. Less developed; most nature remains untouched. ChiCai (Seven Colors) Lake, HongYe, ErZiShan and Wanrong hot springs are of rustic simplicity and natural scenery.

With an old name "ShuiWei", Ruisui is where Xiuguluan River meets the Ocean and the starting point of white water rafting, a must-do in summer. While in winter, the famous Ruisui hot spring is not to be missed. Tourist attractions such as Tropic of Cancer Marker Park and Saoba Stone Pillars are also worth a visit. Milk, coffee, tea, pomelo etc. make for the abundant resources, making it the most successful in agricultural tourism in Hualien.

Fengbin is the most southern town on the east of Costal Mountain Range. Among the magnificently curved coastline, ShiTiPing stands out. Jiqi Beach is one of the only shallow sandy beaches on the east coast and a water sport paradise.

The history of Yuli can be traced back to Qing Dynasty (XianFeng Era) when Han people crossed the mountains to start a new life here. Gradually Yuli became the center of the neighboring villages and is a comparatively big town in southern Hualien. Popular activities include the sea of daylilies on Chike Mountain every summer and Antong hot springs in the winter.


Zhuoxi Township

Zhouxi is the highest aboriginal town in Hualien. Located in Central Mountain Range, the terrain consists mainly of mountains and is the origin of many rivers. It's a well-liked destination with indigenous cultures of Bunun, Atayal and Truku people. Nan'an Visitor Center of Yushan National Park also locates here.


Fuli Township
